Shelton Junior Programs is now in its 23rd year of live theater to school aged students in Mason County!
The concept of live theater opportunities for elementary school students began in the 1930s as a national movement to help children develop an appreciation for live theater performances. Following the lead of Tacoma and Seattle, Olympia was approached in 1940 to sponsor a Junior Programs organization. Shelton students frequently attended productions performed at the Washington Performing Arts Center in Olympia until the 1999 school year.
With initial support from the Olympia program, Shelton Junior Programs was established in 1998/99 school year by a small motivated group of community members for the purpose of providing professional live theater for our Mason County elementary students. By using the local Performing Arts Center, located at the Shelton High School the program was more accessible and affordable than continuing to transport students to Olympia. Shelton Junior Programs sponsors live shows annually for the students in Mason County. Each year approximately 2,500 students benefit from the presentation of these professional productions. We are grateful to the Olympia Junior Programs for their assistance and input in the beginning days here in Shelton, Washington twenty-one years ago. Thank you for your participation in this educational endeavor in our community.
